02charcount.de: Description

charcount.de is a web application that continuously analyses text as it is typed or pasted. The metrics update with every change; there is no calculate button. Besides the plain character count, charcount.de provides five further metrics and, on request, compares the text length against the limit of a selected platform.

In this context the term “character limit” refers to the technical maximum a platform sets for a specific text field — for example a profile description or a post. It does not refer to editorial length recommendations or to the point at which a platform truncates a text in its display.

03charcount.de: Features and metrics

charcount.de provides six metrics for every text:

• Total characters
• Words
• Characters without spaces
• Characters without punctuation
• Paragraphs
• Sentences

In addition, charcount.de checks the text length against the character limits of ten platforms: Instagram, Threads, Facebook, YouTube, X, XING, LinkedIn, TikTok, Telegram and Pinterest. Individual text fields such as bio, post or description can be selected. Alternatively a custom limit can be entered. If the text exceeds the selected limit, charcount.de highlights the excess in the input field and states the number of surplus characters.

04charcount.de: Counting rules

The following rules describe how charcount.de counts. They were verified against the running tool on 2 September 2026.

Total characters

All characters, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks. A line break counts as one character.

Umlauts and ß

One character each.

Emoji

Usually two characters, because internally they consist of two units.

Without spaces

Excluding spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Without punctuation

Only letters, digits and spaces. Punctuation, special characters and emoji are not included.

Words

Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace.

Sentences

Detected at full stops, exclamation marks and question marks.

Paragraphs

Non-empty blocks separated by line breaks.

05charcount.de: Data processing

Counting in charcount.de runs entirely in the user's browser. The text entered is not transmitted to a server for analysis and is not stored.

For audience measurement charcount.de uses the self-hosted analytics software Matomo. It works without cookies and with pseudonymised IP addresses. Among other things it records whether the tool was used: on a visitor's first input a single event is triggered that reports the usage, but not the content entered.
